Diabetes is a common condition caused by the body’s inability to maintain healthy levels of blood sugar. People living with diabetes need to keep a careful eye on their blood sugar levels; if blood sugar levels remain uncontrolled over a long period of time, this can lead to long-term complications affecting vision, kidney, heart, and nerve function.
In the past, diabetes management was focussed on limiting foods rich in sugar and carbohydrates; however, modern and well-designed aged care food services have shifted to a more balanced approach than simply denying residents high fat and sweet foods.
Cater Care’s aged care food services acknowledge the needs of residents in our care. Our aged care catering recognises that each resident has their own likes, dislikes, and dietary requirements, and that living with diabetes should not have to mean avoiding many enjoyable meals forever.
The menus used by our aged care food services are carefully assessed by our Accredited Practising Dietitians in line with current best practise guidelines. This team of dietetic experts ensure that plenty of low GI meals are incorporated into our aged care food menus, so that the residents with diabetes we care for can maintain control over their levels of blood sugar and still enjoy a full menu.
We’re proud to offer our partners and their residents a complex, multilayered approach to managing the health of diabetic residents. If you’re interested in how we can continue to make meaningful mealtimes for our residents with diabetes, then read our factsheet at the link below!
