In aged care communities, mealtimes offer more than just nutrition; they are opportunities to foster connection, dignity, and a sense of belonging.
While quality food and nutrition have always been central to nursing home catering, the challenges posed by the strengthened quality standards now encourage us to think even bigger about how dining experiences can enhance residents’ daily lives.

Nursing home residents often struggle with feelings of loneliness and isolation. Keeping residents happy and engaged is a cornerstone of quality residential care and exciting events are essential in helping residents feel involved.
Since nostalgia is so closely linked to our senses, food and cooking are among the most effective ways to bring this excitement to your aged care home.
Cater Care currently offers several community engagement initiatives that support this, such as our Major Themes Program, Secrets from the Kitchen live events, and gift initiatives throughout the year. These programs have seen a great uptake with our nursing home catering clients.
To improve on our existing foundations, we’re now inviting residents to step behind the counter and participate in our Community Kitchen.
Our Community Kitchen invites residents to help prepare a range of simple dishes the whole residential community can enjoy. Residents get the chance to prepare bread, cook pizzas, bake cupcakes, and more with the assistance of care staff, supporting them to feel productive and experience the joys of a community cooking class in the comfort of their own home.
Beyond the fun, these activities align closely with the Aged Care Quality Standards. Standard 6 focuses on meeting residents’ individual needs, while Standard 7 emphasises dignity, respect, and meaningful engagement. Through cooking, we give residents the opportunity to make choices, contribute to their community, and maintain independence.

Our on-site chefs lead each session and help bring residents and communities together. We understand that not every care home can easily turn a dining room into a working kitchen, and that’s where we step in. Our Community Kitchen menu is fully aligned with the new standards, so clients never have to worry about selecting the right positive-ageing dishes.
And to make everything seamless, our on-site teams can supply care staff with all the ingredients, equipment, and supporting materials they need.
As a leader in care home catering in Australia, Cater Care is proud to deliver aged care catering services that go beyond compliance. The Community Kitchen and other community engagement programs are small examples of how we foster connection and improve quality of life as a part of our contract catering services everyday.
